USUN Director of Speechwriting Rejoins West Wing Writers
New York, NY – Today, West Wing Writers announced that Sarah Gruen has rejoined the firm as a Senior Director. Gruen returns to the firm from the United States Mission to the United Nations, where she served as Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield’s Director of Speechwriting.
During a pivotal moment in global affairs, Sarah helped the Biden-Harris Administration affirm its commitment to defending democracy, upholding human rights, addressing the crises that make the front page – and uplifting the causes that don’t. Sarah’s words were delivered before presidents, premiers, and prime ministers at the UN Security Council and General Assembly, and reached diverse audiences across the US and around the world: from students in Georgia to peacekeepers in Ghana and entrepreneurs in Guyana.
“Our clients are looking for partners who understand the complexities of the current moment, and can help them communicate to multiple stakeholders with clarity and compassion. That’s Sarah.” said Jeff Shesol, the firm’s co-founder. “Her experience—along with her wit, creativity, and agility—will help leaders of all stripes tell their stories, both within their organizations and beyond them.”
Drawing on years of speechwriting and communications experience, Sarah looks forward to expanding the firm’s footprint globally as well as serving a range of US-based clients. She is one of many West Wing Writers alumni to have served in the Biden-Harris administration; in addition to the White House, alumni held the pen at the Departments of State, Defense, Energy, Transportation, and Education, as well as USAID.
Sarah began her career at West Wing Writers, where she has written for Fortune 500 CEOs, EGOT winners, and visionary leaders in government, technology, and philanthropy. She also helped lead WWW’s humor practice, penning jokes, toasts, and roasts for presidents past, present, and future — as well as for The New Yorker, the New York Times, and McSweeney’s under her own byline.
“Working in the Biden-Harris Administration was the honor of a lifetime. Doing that work alongside so many outstanding West Wing Writers alumni made the experience even more meaningful for me — and more impactful for the American people,” said Gruen. “I’m thrilled to return to the firm that taught me, and so many writers, so much of what we know — and to continue helping leaders develop the ideas and find the words to meet this moment.”
